Pruning That Works With the Tree, Not Against It
Pruning is the most commonly performed and most commonly misunderstood tree care practice. Done well, it improves structure, extends lifespan, and reduces risk over time. Done poorly, it creates wounds that invite decay, eliminates the tissue trees need to generate energy, and accelerates the very decline it was meant to prevent.
All pruning at Very Good Tree Service follows ANSI A300 standards and is guided by arboricultural science, not convention. Our crews are trained to make purposeful cuts, and every job is reviewed by an ISA Certified Arborist before work begins.
Our Tree Trimming Services
Hazard Reduction Dead, dying, and structurally compromised wood doesn’t belong over people, structures, or vehicles. We identify and remove hazard material with precision, targeting the specific limbs that pose risk without stripping the crown unnecessarily.
Structural Pruning Young trees can be directed toward better architecture with early intervention. Subordinating competing leaders, reducing long lateral limbs, and improving scaffold spacing are investments that pay returns for decades. This is the kind of pruning that doesn’t always look dramatic in the short term, but defines what the tree becomes.
Clearance Pruning When trees grow into structures, utilities, or traffic sight lines, clearance pruning creates separation while maintaining as much canopy as possible. We don’t cut back to arbitrary distances. We cut to appropriate laterals that allow the canopy to respond and recover naturally.
Crown Cleaning Removal of dead, rubbing, crossing, and weakly attached branches from throughout the canopy. This is standard maintenance for mature trees and is typically combined with other pruning objectives.
Restorative Pruning Some trees come to us with a history of topping, flush cuts, or repeated over-pruning. We can’t undo past damage, but careful restorative work over multiple pruning cycles can significantly improve structure, reduce decay exposure, and extend the tree’s useful life.
We don’t top trees. Topping removes the terminal leaders that drive a tree’s structural development, leaves massive wounds that invite decay and epicormic regrowth, and dramatically shortens the life of otherwise viable trees. If you’ve been told your tree needs topping, we’re glad to offer a second opinion.
All trimming and structural support work is performed by our trained crews with an ISA Certified Arborist on site and under the supervision of an ISA Board Certified Master Arborist.
All Tree
Services
Our tree services (which include tree felling and removal, tree pruning, tree trimming, tree identification, and emergency tree removal) help ensure that your landscape is safe, healthy, and aesthetically appealing. It is our goal to protect your family and property from potential tree hazards while maintaining natural beauty and maximizing tree health and longevity.

Tree Health Care
Seeing symptoms such as discolored leaves, dead branches, or early leaf drop? The cause could be a minor problem that is easily explained and corrected or something more that needs a treatment.

Tree Inspection
At Very Good Tree Service, we know how your trees should look, smell, and feel to be their best. We offer inspection services in Santa Fe, Los Alamos, and Northern New Mexico to let you know if your trees are healthy and up to par.

Tree Removal
A dead or damaged tree can become a serious hazard. We provide emergency and non-emergency tree removal services in Santa Fe, Los Alamos, and surrounding areas to ensure your property remains safe.
Tree Education
Knowledge is power and we love teaching others about their trees. We invite you to contact us if you would like to be informed about your trees.

Tree Cabling
Some trees are too valuable to lose, to their owners, to their landscapes, and to the larger ecosystem they’ve become part of. When a tree develops structural weaknesses that pruning alone can’t resolve, cabling and bracing can extend its safe, productive life by decades.
